The castle Palanok, the main attraction of the city, is seen already in some kilometers before Mukacheve. Its foundation is the extinct volcono with the high of 68 meters. Palanok is the invincible and the photogenic relic of the Middle Ages.
In IX-XI centuries the first wooden fortifying had appeared here. In XIII century the oak paling had changed into the brick walls. In 1396 Mukacheve had felt to the Prince Fedir Koriatovych’s lot.
It is supposed the magnate had strengthened the castle, had put a ditch round and remade it into its residence. And he had ordered to hollow out the well in the rock under the Old tower.
Palanok has already impressed by its impregnability: the walls 5 meters thick, the big constant garrison, 164 cannons, 60 barrels of powder, a lot of provisions. During the times of Transylvanian princes Rakotsi (1633-1711) the castle has become the most fortified citadel in the Central Europe. It has had eight lines of the defence.
Palanok has been the stronghold of anti Gabsburgh struggle of Kurutsy (the adherents of anti Gabsburgh movement) and the capital of Transylvania (1705) – at that time even the monetary yard was here, and the Austrian political prison (1782-1897).
And since December, 1805 till March, 1806 these walls have been hiding from the Napoleon’s army the most important treasure of Hungary – the Hungarian Saint Crown.
During the Soviet period the castle has been the school for the machine operators, the school for the heads of collective farms.
Now the historical museum (since 1960) is situated here, the picture gallery, the art gallery and comfortable cafes are placed instead of former garrison barracks. You must be sure acquainted with all three terraces: the lower, middle and upper castles.
The castle is opened everyday, except Monday, from 10.00 a.m. till 18.00 p.m.
