The Svirzskiy Castle

The castle is situated on the picturesque hill surrounded from three sides with the wide pond. There are no documental facts about the time of its foundation. According to the researchers’ ideas it could be erected already in XV century.

In 1648 the fortifying has been destroyed by the Cossack detachments in the period of Polish-Cossack wars. Since the second half of XVII century the castle has been lapsing to the property of the count Alexander Tsentner, who had decided to rebuild it into the fortified residence.

During the reconstruction the fortifying territory has been considerably widen. The castle had consisted of two yards – the parade and the administrative, which had been situating on different levels and had been connecting with the stairs. According the planning configuration the yards’ housing system had been nearered to the trapezium, divided by halves. The upper and parade yards, surrounded with one-storied housing buildings with the cellars, have been reminding the regular castle with undergate, two corners from the south and one from the northern west square towers. On the axis of undergate two level tower from the opposite side the one-storied palace have been placed. The lower or the administrative yard with separate entrance gate has adjoined the parade one from the west and has been formed with one-storied buildings and cellars. In the centre of the western building the fifth castle’s tower, square in the plan, has been placed.

In spite of the further destructions (the fire in1892, the World War I) and the reconstructions of the castle, his planning and spatial structure, formed in XVII century, has been left in general unchangeable. And so it is nowadays. The entrance portals of white stone, the windows’ frames and other elements of decoration, are fulfilled in the style of late Renaissance.

The bright example of connecting the defensive and housing functions, the Svirzskiy castle opens the historical process of the development the castle into the palace.
