The Powder tower in Lviv

The Powder tower of 1554-1556 is if a single important fortification monument of Lviv’s building, which had kept till nowadays.

Generally there were some powerful towers, gates and bastions, which had been defending the city, but the only one the Powder tower had left till nowadays. The stones from the old Town arsenal have been used for its building. The tower was the most powerful, because just from this side the Eastern assailants have been appearing. The defensive banks are the tower’s support. They had kept since ancient times. But 200 years ago the park, called Gubernatorial banks, because the Austrian residence was here, had built on them.

This construction has been used not only in defensive aims. Since ancient times Lviv was the trading city. Everything has been subordinated to receive profit from the trade. The tower has been using as the grain’s warehouse, when the peace came.

Just since the end of 50-th years of the past century the architect’s house is situated in the tower.

Just here the cultural meetings have been held here. Though the tower looks large from outside, but the rooms are small inside. The walls’ thickness comes up to three meters. Two lions, made of white marble, guard the entrance to the tower.
