Maryinskiy or Tsar’s palace in Kyiv is the monument of the history, the city-building and the architecture. It was built in 1750-1755. It was situated on the historical place between Kreshtchatyk and Pechersk, which had some names – “Klov”, “Palace’s part”, and “Lypky”.
The palace is situated in the picturesque corner of Lypky. The place is also comfortable because of the closeness to the objects of worship of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Besides, the palace was surrounded by the beautiful park, created in 1710 by Petro I. The palace has been built on the project of Bartolomeo Rastrelli. He was famous as the creator of many majestic and original buildings.
Sinking in verdure the Tsar’s palace had the comfortable location, as it was situated on the way from Pechersk monastery to the trading region of Kyiv – Podol.
The architecture of the palace impresses by the riches of ornaments, cartouches, masks, vases on the balustrades, outside window frames, picturesque and expressive balcony’s fences – the plastic design of facades. The color composition gives it more significance – the combination of whitedecoration on the intensive turquoise background on the walls.
The palace has been consisted of the general two-storied central building and two side one-storied outbuildings, which were decorated with the wonderful modeling. The second floor, fulfilled of wood, traditional for Rus, was assigned for housing rooms, and the first stone floor had belonged to the servants. The length of the palace is 65,3 meters along the main façade, from the park’s side is 119,1 meters, the width of the middle building – 20 meters , and the angles are 9,1 meters. The height of the building is near the 16 meters.
The palace’s building had lasted till 1755. The first and the palace’s wings have made of stone, and the second floor – of the wood. The decoration works had lasted till 1760.
In the twenty eight rooms of the upper floor the walls have been overlaid with different wallpapers in gilded carved frames, the floor has been covered with rich sorts of the wood, the stoves have been made of the blue glazed tile with decorating drawing.
The empress Elizabeth II died in 1761 and so the palace hadn’t received her.
The second, who had lived in the palace for a long time was Catherine II. On the eve of her arrival the building has been restored again. The façade has been repaired and painted in usual grey and blue colors.
Catherine II has been arranging the numerous grand receptions, masquerades, balls and performances. After her leaving mainly the representatives of high Kyiv’s administration had lived in Mariyskiy.
During the World War II the palace had been suffered very much. After the city’s liberation in 1944-1951 the restoration was realized. But the palace hasn’t been restored in the original look. After the restoration the government receptions have been holding in it.
At present the Maryinskiy palace is such as it has become in 1870. The outbuildings, the court and the part of the park were built symmetric to the central two-storied building of the palace. The southern façade is solemn, representative, with two women statues, which symbolized the Charity and the Justice. In front of it there are fountains, decorated with the copies of French rococo sculptures. The northern façade is more chambers. The internal space of the palace is formed around the ample entrance hall. The palace’s and outbuilding’s interiors are full of light and decorated magnificently with different elements. The walls are decorated with the pilasters.
The palace is one of the best examples of interconnection in palace and park architecture in XVIII century.
