The Golden Gates in Kyiv

The Golden Gates in Kyiv – it is one of few monuments of Kyiv Rus defensive architecture, which had reached nowadays.

Kyiv has been surrounded with high earth banks 3,5 kilometers long. These banks lied across the present streets of the central part of Kyiv – from the Lviv’s Square along the Yaroslaviv Val Street to the Golden Gates.

The Golden Gates were the main entry to Kyiv. This wonderful creation of the Old Russian architects – the powerful fighting tower, which has been ended with the Annunciation Church – had compelled admiration of the contemporaries and had inspired the horror on the enemies with its impregnability. The time hadn’t kept the monument. From the traveler’s entries we know that already in XVI-XVII centuries the Golden Gates were almost destroyed. Though, till the middle of XVIII century they have been the entry to Kyiv. In the middle of XVIII century the ruins of ancient Golden Gates have been filled up with earth and the new ones have been erected near according to the project of engineer D.Debosquet.

The Kyivans had seen the ancient monument again in 1832, when K.Lohvitskiy accomplished the archaeological excavations and opened the remains of the Golden Gates. The works for the ruin’s strengthening have been held, on the separate parts the repair of ancient brickwork was done, the counterforts were erected, the metal bundles were made. The Golden Gates has kept in such look till our times.

In 1972-1973 after the architectural and archeological learning of ruins the ancient level of the entry has been determined, the original height of the arches has been calculated, the sizes, the Gate’s tower construction have been specified.

The ancient brickwork of the Golden Gates makes the especial impression from the entry’s side. The height of the walls is 9,5 meters. The passage breadth is 6,4 meters.

The reconstructed pavilion reproduces the Golden Gates in such look: the main part shows the tower with the merlons 14 meters high; the tower has the additional projection from the external facade.

The undergate church was reproduced in the look of the three-naved temple with one cupola.

In the architectural decoration of the façade the ornaments of the brick have been used. The floor of the temple had been decorated with mosaic.

The unveiling of the reconstructed pavilion “The Golden Gates” has been taken place in the May, 1982.

Nowadays the Golden Gates is one of famous tourist routs in Kyiv.
