Kamianets-Podilskiy heads the top-5 of the most popular tourist routs in Ukraine.
The Old town of Kamianets, recognized the one of the seven Ukrainian wonders, has the unusual aura, which forces the tourists to come here again and again, in spite of that the places in some proper hotels must be reserved in some weeks before (such as “Gala-Hotel”, “Hetman”, “Cleopatra”, “Taras Bulba”). And the guides are telling, just made-up, but absolutely “true” stories about Ustym Karmeliuk and Franciscans.
The town yields by the number of monuments only to Kyiv or Lviv, and the picturesque canyon of Smotrych river, decorated with numerous towers and local legends, attracts the dreamers from all Ukraine. At first it is better to use the guide, and then to ask the inhabitants about the catacombs and drifts, the Armenian blocks and pagan pagoda.
The ancient Kamianets is the combination of various cultures: the Ukrainian, Polish, Armenian, Russian, Jewish, Turkish and Gipsy. The Petropavlivskiy cathedral, the only Christian’s temple, where the statue of Mother of God, situated on the top of the Muslim minaret is the bright example of this combination.
In the cathedral there is one of Kamianets wonders – the marble tomb of Laura Pshezdytska. The statue is made in such a masterly way, that it seems the girl has just nodded in a minute.
There are two unchangeable places of the tourist’s pilgrimage. It is the City hall with the favourite museum of tortures, and as a rule the Old fortress.
The fortress is a symbol of the city. It offers to shoot from the “hystorical” bow or arbalest, to be photographed in the costumes of past epochs and to buy souvenirs.
There are many restaurants and cafes in Kamianets. You can amuse yourself to take the bicycle on hire – it is the best way to drive round the Old town. In the park the tourists are offered the riding, and in the canyon – the extreme amusements.
